Airplay

by Marissa Potts

Innovative art inflates to life at Airplay in Downtown Orlando! Throughout October, Airplay was an interactive art installation featuring work from the UK called “Architects of Air”. Although this event is over, following the success of the past couple of years, we can expect and hope to see this event return with new art exhibits in the future!

Where is it?

Airplay was presented by Orlando Health this year, and took place at the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts. Well, technically in the plaza directly in front of Dr. Phillips Center! We visited on a weekday so it was pretty easy to find parking directly across the street, but there are several parking garages and lots close by for busier days.

The event did not have any food, but with its location in Downtown there were plenty of options nearby for anyone looking for a snack before or after! Some of my personal favorites are Lake Eola Wine Company and DoveCote, and for a drink I love Pups Pub and Cocktails and Screams!

The Art

The main feature of the event this year was the Lunarium called Architects of Air. This piece came from the UK and was a beautiful and peaceful experience! We were told by the guides that the artist was inspired by his travels from all over Europe and the Middle East. The Architects of Air installation was designed after Islamic architecture and there is peaceful music playing in the background as you walk through to really set the vibe.

We loved traveling through the airlock and being taken into the colors and gorgeous shapes all around us. Shoes did have to be removed before walking in and no jumping was allowed inside, but most people just sat and relaxed inside. Of course, it was also the perfect place to take pictures with gorgeous backgrounds behind!

Other Offerings

Since the event was presented by Orlando Health, there were also several inflatables around the property in the shapes of human organs. These weren’t interactive but they were pretty neat to look at!

Lastly, there was a huge Garden Maze to play inside of. This was a huge inflatable that was set up like an obstacle course, themed like a garden. However, everything was proportionally huge to make you feel like you were as big as an ant! I really enjoyed this portion of Airplay, it was a lot of fun and also another great place to take pictures! This was also a great area for kids to play in, because they could run wild and free inside!

Overall

Beautiful art and fun times await at Airplay presented by Orlando Health. This event has come to an end, but we are excited at the possibility of it returning again next year! There are always fun events happening in Orlando and Airplay is just one example of all of the excitement that happens year-round!

Downtown Orlando

Downtown Orlando is a beautiful area of Central Florida for anyone who loves the excitement of the city. There are always events happening, new places to visit, and restaurants and bars that have been local favorites for years. Eola Heights and Thornton Park have some of the most popular neighborhoods in Downtown. These are some of my favorites to visit, with brick roads, beautiful vintage homes, and shady trees lining the streets. With only about thirty minutes to the theme parks and also UCF, Downtown is a great place to stay close to all the fun Central Florida has to offer. Curious about homes in Downtown?
