The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) Board approved a bid for $218.7 million in improvements to State Road 408 that will also upgrade streets leading into west Orlando and Camping World Stadium.

The contract was awarded to Hubbard Construction at the Board's Dec. 11 meeting. Among the project elements is the addition of an eastbound lane, west of Church Street to east of Westmoreland Drive. The westbound exit ramp to Tampa Ave. will be rebuilt and westbound exit ramps to Orange Blossom Trail and I-4 will be realigned with electronic tolling gantries added. Bridges over OBT, Westmoreland Dr., and Tampa, Rio Grande, Parramore, Hicks, and Division avenues will also be upgraded.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026 with a projected three-year timeline to completion.

Local street improvements

In addition to expressway upgrades, CFX will partner with the City of Orlando to coordinate enhancements to Rio Grande and Tampa avenues. Planned improvements include:

  • Street resurfacing
  • Sidewalk and lighting additions
  • Stormwater management

According to CFX engineering director David Falk, street projects will follow a separate timeline with completion expected by July 2027. The S.R. 408 timeline contains built-in benchmarks to lessen the impact on the 2027 NFL season, when Camping World Stadium is scheduled to host the Jacksonville Jaguars while EverBank Stadium undergoes its own $1.4 billion renovation.

Project timing coincides with Camping World Stadium renovations that are aiming for a summer 2027 completion. The $400 million renovation will expanded upper decks, enhance guest amenities, and improve infrastructure. The measures will support the Jaguars' residency and elevate the stadium's profile for future high-profile events. Investments in the surrounding roadways are also key to the ongoing development of Orlando's west side community and in building the area as a sports and entertainment hub.
