Where is it?
Located just minutes from downtown Orlando, College Park feels like it's just the right blend of suburban tranquility and urban convenience. Situated within close proximity to major highways like the I-4 and the East-West Expressway, College Park provides easy access to neighboring cities like Winter Park, Maitland, and Altamonte Springs. Whether you're commuting to work or exploring the attractions of Central Florida, College Park's central location makes it a prime destination for those seeking the best of both worlds.
History of College Park
College Park traces its origins back to citrus grower John Ericsson, who erected the neighborhood's first known home amidst an expansive 80-acre grove. Following Ericsson's lead, other settlers began to establish residences in the area, supported by the arrival of the South Florida Railroad in 1880.
However, progress was impeded by the harsh freeze of 1894, stalling growth for over a decade. The neighborhood eventually experienced a resurgence during the real estate boom of the 1920s, coinciding with Orlando's expansion northward to encompass College Park.
Despite setbacks during the Great Depression, College Park rebounded in the post-World War II era, thanks in part to the strategic investments of businessman Welborn C. Phillips, who acquired numerous vacant lots west of Edgewater Drive. Notable residents during this period included astronaut John Young and generation writer Jack Kerouac, whose former residence now operates as the Kerouac Project, fostering emerging literary talent and establishing Orlando's presence on the global literary stage.
