When thinking about surfing in Florida, people's minds may go straight to the beach with many famous options along the coast. But what if surfers could do it more inland, at a man made surf park in Orlando?
Ocean Sports Development and OCE West Orange LLC have officially announced their plan for a massive 15 acre Surf Park close to Walt Disney World in a former construction landfill site. The colossal $45 million project promises to bring the thrill of surfing to Central Florida, offering an innovative and immersive experience for residents and visitors alike.
Located at 7902 Avalon Road in Horizon West, a rapidly growing and dynamic community in Orlando, the surf park is expected to become a major attraction, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond.
What will this include?
The project will showcase a 15-acre surf pool surrounded by an artificial beach and a boardwalk. Enhancing the recreational offerings, the surroundings will include sand volleyball courts, an inviting event pavilion, and an expansive 27,000-square-foot athletic training center. The complex will also house the renowned BC Surf & Sport Superstore, a collection of retail shops, a restaurant, and two vibrant tiki bars. For those who prefer to be spectators, the outdoor experience will be elevated with the opportunity to watch individual surfers or competition events on one of two colossal 700-foot-wide video screens.
Utilizing programmable flow controls to produce an artificial reef effect, the Webber Wave Pool system will create waves of different sizes, some big enough to train professional surfers.
From beginners to seasoned pros, the facility aims to provide a diverse and inclusive surfing experience. The artificial waves, generated through cutting-edge technology, will emulate ocean surfing, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the sport in a controlled and safe environment.
Environmental and Ecological
The developers are dedicated to converting the ex-landfill area into an environmentally secure and ecologically advanced community resource. The pool basin is set to feature a geosynthetic liner, accompanied by an underlay of sand and bentonite clay. Wave generation equipment will be powered by a solar grid, and cutting-edge water treatment systems will ensure comprehensive surface water reuse. These integrated systems will serve as focal points for academic programs catering to high school and collegiate studies.
