National Geographic honors Orlando’s Steinmetz Hall

 By Jim Carchidi

Local culture is making international news with National Geographic recognizing Steinmetz Hall on a list of “esteemed theaters around the world that are well worth a visit.”

The acclaimed publication in its October 17 edition chose nine international theaters that include Japan’s Minamiza Theater, Mexico’s Palacio Bellas Artes, and China’s Harbin Grand Theater. Steinmetz Hall was one of only two U.S. theaters to make the list, along with Boston’s Citizens Opera House. The National Geographic write-up notes Steinmetz Hall’s, “polished copper handrails and the cherrywood trims,” but also points out, “every aspect, from the materials to the shape of the seats, enhances the sound.”

The 1,700-seat Steinmetz Hall opened at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 14, 2022. Engineers and builders rose to the challenge of creating an acoustically perfect performance environment that is buffered by rubber pads that stop vibration transfer from neighboring theaters and from outside the building.

The stage features a multiform design that moves on rails, allowing an adjustable base size. Storage and other necessities usually found backstage are on a lower level and rigging for a moveable ceiling is located high above. The design achieved an N1 acoustic rating, representing the lowest level of sound detection for a human ear.

“You’ll experience the acoustics at their very best,” said Dr Phillips Center Executive Vice President Spencer Tong in the Nat Geo story. “The reverberation and richness converge into a sound that feels truly alive.”

Architectural Digest in 2023 named Steinmetz Hall to its “11 Most Beautiful Theaters in the World” list, and the theater was honored with the LIT Lighting Design Award in 2022 for its cultural building lighting design.

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Classic Album Live - Thriller by Michael Jackson, Dog Man - The Musical, and Central Florida Ballet - A Christmas Nutcracker Tale are among the performances on the Steinmetz Hall November calendar. Click here for more information and tickets.
