New Food Hall & Bar Opens in the Packing District

By Yasmene Warren

Food halls are the perfect places to go when you’ve got people around you with diverse palates. With the growth of Orlando’s Packing District on the rise, new additions are being made to it — one being the Great Southern Box Company food hall.

Check out what new vendors have now opened up shop in the area!

The History Behind the Building

Dap design was selected as the architect for the Great Southern Box Company building, according to the Packing District website. Their role in this project was especially crucial in the preservation and conversion of the historic spot.

"The approach to preserving the historic Great Southern Box Building is grounded in the celebration of what was already there. Originally used by Dr. Phillips as a warehouse/delivery space for the citrus industry; the building’s new use will be outward facing and serve as an extension to encourage gathering amongst the community.

The building will be converted into a food hall, brewery and event hall tied together with shaded outdoor space. The project will serve as an amenity to not only College Park natives, but the newly developed Packing District."

Great Southern Box Company

As of 2022, construction of the Great Southern Box Company food hall was well underway, with completion just a couple months ago on May 24th, 2024! This anticipated eatery sits on the corner of Princeton Street and Orange Blossom Trail, and is run by Hospitality HQ in the Southern Box building.

The hall sits on 22,400 square feet of the district, with a microbrewery and test kitchen. This also includes a 4,000 square foot event space, large parking area, monument sign for the Packing District, and plenty of retail and office space.

It is home to 11 vendors focusing on “immigrant cuisine”, from Cuban street food to Indian cuisine. In addition to the centrally located bar, these current vendors include:

Feel free to take your food here or to go! There’s plenty of seating in the hall both indoor, for those looking to escape the Florida heat, and outdoor on the open lawn.

More on the Packing District

The Packing District’s most recent upgrade outside of the food hall is the replica Dr. Phillips Juice Stand. This replica pays homage to Dr. Phillips and his many contributions to the citrus industry.

Since its opening in January, the juice stand has hosted a variety of local Orlando vendors such as Foxtail Coffee, Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream, and Ravenous Pig Brewing Company.

More is in the works, and you won’t want to miss what the Packing District brings to the City Beautiful! Check out their timeline for current and future projects on their site!

Overall

With the new arrival/revitalization of the Great Southern Box Company building, this has brought some delicious, new and unique vendors to the growing area! The Packing District continues to introduce new projects to further engage the community, while also preserving the history of the district.

The Packing District

Rich in history comes Orlando’s Packing District. This area strives to establish health, wellness, and community outside the College Park neighborhood - located near Orange Blossom Trail and John Young Parkway.

What was once home to renowned citrus producer Dr. Phillips, who used his profits to build the community we know and love today, has since grown into a close-knit, heartwarming community.

There are over 97 acres of this development being converted into mixed-use residential spaces that aim to better serve the community that surrounds it. You can be a part of that growing community as well! With our team helping you along the way, you’re moments away from a vibrant future in Orlando.
