Orlando Ranked #3 in Top 20 Cities People Are Moving To

By Holley Long

Orlando is attracting a lot of relocation, according to the PODS Enterprises’ 2023 U.S. annual moving trends report. The report shows that on the list of top cities people are moving to, the City Beautiful is third.

You may be thinking, why is this the case? And what does this mean? Keep reading to find out!

What is the moving trends report?

PODS Enterprises has been a leader in the moving and storage industry for the last 25 years. The moving trends report, which last year ranked Orlando ninth on its list of top cities people are relocating to, looks at data from the past 15 months to learn where consumers are deciding to make their next move, as well as what factors may have affected their decision.

What drove Orlando’s jump on the list?

Going from ninth on the list to third is a pretty big leap. While PODS Enterprises says remote work played a large part in people’s moving decisions in 2022, the economy appears to be the driving factor in 2023.

According to CNBC’s list of the top states for business, Florida is ranked #8, with an unemployment rate of 2.6% as of May. Orlando also has a 2.6% unemployment rate, and according to the Orlando Economic Partnership the city added more than 50,000 new jobs from May 2022 to May 2023, with most of the gains in the leisure and hospitality industries.

What else impacted the rankings?

It’s notable that over 80% of the cities listed on the moving trends report are located in southern U.S. states. Florida is the leading state for relocations with six of its metropolitan areas making the list - Sarasota and Ocala are second and fourth on the list, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay are eighth and ninth, and Melbourne is twelfth.

PODS Enterprises reports that high costs of living, high crime rates, and poor weather conditions played a part in pushing people to move to areas with low tax rates, warmer weather, and (comparatively) affordable housing. While Florida’s housing market has seen a significant cost increase over the last few years, the lack of a state income tax and promise of practically year-round sunshine still makes it a top place for relocation.
