The Moderne in Mills 50

By Yasmene Warren

Feening for something new and fresh to satisfy your taste buds? If you’re looking for good eats and unique drinks, then The Moderne in Mills 50 is here to bring you both!

All About Moderne

The Moderne is a restaurant and cocktail bar located on East Colonial Drive in the Mills 50 district. It focuses on deconstructing classic drinks and rebuilding them, as well as providing its own unique take on culinary dishes that reflect the culinary diversity in Mills 50.

This restaurant just began doing reservations, which can be made through Google or OpenTable! There is a 10 minutes grace period on reservations, so be sure to get there early as parking is limited. There’s indoor, outdoor and bar seating to choose from, but of course, wait times can still vary depending on seating choice.

Because of long wait times, there are a few dining rules. There is a two hour dining limit on indoor tables only, the bar is first come first serve, lounge seating is self service and drinks only — no food — and parties larger than five are subject to a 20% gratuity charge.

Moderne is open Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Bites

Moderne serves its dishes in a tapas dining style, meaning that they’re meant to be shared with others. Its dinner menu mostly consists of Asian and Mediterranean-inspired small plates.

On this menu, you’ll find appetizers such as edamame, Korean fried chicken, gyoza, crispy calamari, Japanese poutine and so much more.

Moderne also has kushiyaki, which is a dish consisting of skewered grilled meats. You can order a chicken skewer, beef skewer, jumbo prawn skewer, Chilean sea bass skewer and shiitake mushroom skewer.

The Vibes

If you want to know what it feels like to dine in a small but lively restaurant, then Moderne is definitely the place you’ll want to put in your GPS for tonight’s dinner. As its website states, Moderne “utilizes 1930s ArtModerne philosophy to create a timeless venue where the past seamlessly coexists with the present,” and it does an exceptional job at achieving just that.

When you first walk in, you’re met with red walls with funky patterns, warm lighting and plenty of potted plant life to keep you company at your table! Despite its busy, thriving environment, Moderne provides a relatively chill dining experience, which perfectly executes the timeless 1930s vibe this restaurant seeks to give off.

Overall

The dishes at Moderne are unique but tasty, and although they’re small in size, they’re packed full of flavor! Coming here will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back in time while still maintaining that modern touch. Because there are no reservations, it can get pretty busy, and because it’s located on a tiny strip in Mills 50, parking can be tricky, so be sure to get there early! Overall, you won’t be disappointed with your visit to The Moderne.
