Maitland’s Development Review Committee granted the final approval for a Trelago Way project that will include a Trader Joe’s. The unanimous vote at the June 17 meeting was the last step before permitting begins.

The Orlando Real reported Maitland City Council’s previous approval of planned development rezoning for a 2.9-acre parcel, just west of Trelago Market. Site plans show a 17,800 square-foot building divided between a 12,500-square-foot anchor tenant and a 5,300-square-foot retail space. Two smaller retail/restaurant buildings are at the east side of the parking lot. No mention of a Trader Joe’s appeared in the city council meeting agenda item, but renderings of a generic grocery store were labeled as “Trader Joe’s Maitland.”
The plans have since gone though the city's approval process. Buffer adjustments are needed for tree allowances at the property's north side, but the development review committee's approval means the permitting process will now begin. No further timelines are available.
An expanding market
Tenants at the 65,000-square-foot Trelago Market include Crunch Fitness, Mandola’s Italian Kitchen, and Great Greek Mediterranean Grill. A neighboring Trader Joe’s would bring a lot more attention and shoppers, but the well-known parking issues at Trader Joe’s Lakeside location in Winter Park have some residents posting concerns to City of Maitland social media.
The Trelago site plans show a 133-space parking lot servicing all four tenants, but adjacent Trelago Market parking would accommodate overflow. The Maitland Trader Joe's is approximately three miles from the Lakeside shopping plaza and could provide some relief for the Winter Park store.

Additional Trader Joe's locations are in the works for Central Florida. Another is planned near the University of Central Florida at 1444 N. Alafaya Trail, and a store in Kissimmee's Loop West was confirmed last year. As with the Maitland location, Loop West plans included no branding but showed a Trader Joe’s-style building design by the intersection of Thacker Road and Dyer Boulevard. The adjacent shopping center can accommodate overflow from its 173-space parking lot.
