National grocer and popular shopping destination Trader Joe’s is expanding its Central Florida presence with a new store in Maitland's Trelago district and a potential location in Kissimmee's Loop West shopping center.

A GrowthSpotter report cites plans filed by Loop West owners, North American Development Group, that show a Trader Joe’s-style design north of the JC Penny location, by the intersection of Thacker Road and Dyer Boulevard. The 12,500-square-foot layout matches typical Trader Joe’s dimensions, and the adjacent shopping center could accommodate any overflow from its 173-space lot.
According to the story, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson declined to confirm plans for the Loop West location but said, “We are actively looking at hundreds of neighborhoods across the country, including areas in Kissimmee, as we hope to open more new neighborhood stores each year.”

A proposed Maitland location took a step toward reality on Dec. 8 when city council approved the first reading for the planned development rezoning of the Lot 3 property at Trelago Market, 601 Trelago Way. While no mention of the Trader Joe’s brand appeared in the meeting agenda item, plans submitted on behalf of Trelago Market owners, Harbour Real Estate Partners, include renderings of a generic grocery store that bear the label, “Trader Joe’s Maitland.” The site plan includes one 12,500 square-foot “anchor” and an additional 5,300 square-foot retail building with a 134-space parking lot.
The Trelago mixed-use district at Maitland Concourse North is introducing new retail, dining, offices, and residential units. The addition of a Trader Joe’s would boost its profile and attract numerous shoppers, as the brand did at its Winter Park and Dr. Phillips locations. Providing the second reading is approved, the next step for the Maitland location is a site plan review and construction permitting.

Trader Joe’s is following through with an aggressive expansion plan that this year has added approximately 36 stores across the U.S.
