The effects of a 6.1-magnitude earthquake were felt across Florida on Monday, June 8, including in downtown Orlando and at Walt Disney World Resort.
Far-reaching effects
According to U.S. Geological Survey and AccuWeather reports, the epicenter was approximately 62 miles west of Mantua, Cuba, and occurred 6 miles below the ocean surface. No tsunami threats were issued but impacts stretched nearly 400 miles from the epicenter. Downtown Miami buildings were evacuated out of caution while residents and businesses from Davenport to Apopka and out to Cape Canaveral reported minor tremors.
Historic impact
Gulf earthquakes are not unheard of but effects rarely reach Florida. Since 1992, more than 20 have been reported in or near the state. The most significant event was centered near Palatka in 1879. A pair of 30-second tremors shook residents as far away as Tallahassee and Cedar Key. In 2024, Treasure Coast residents felt minor effects from a 4.0 magnitude earthquake centered off the east coast.

Walt Disney World Resort temporarily suspended operations at rides including Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain and TRON Lightcycle Run while minor effects were felt at Universal Orlando Resort.
No injuries or damages were reported at any Florida city and operations returned to normal within hours of the event.
