Orlando International Airport (MCO) is among the major U.S. flight hubs affected by air traffic cuts, imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the wake of the ongoing government shutdown. Flight reductions began at 4% on the morning of Friday, Nov. 7, and will increase to 5% on Saturday, Nov. 8, and to 6% on Sunday, Nov. 9. The cuts could go beyond 10% if the shutdown lasts into the week of November 16.
According to Flight Aware, MCO recorded 119 delays and 29 cancellations as of 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. Across the country, more than 850 flights had been cancelled and more than 2,000 had been delayed.

The cuts are meant to relieve staff stress and fatigue as the shutdown continues. Air traffic controllers and TSA agents are among the essential federal employees required to work without pay. CNN reported the National Air Traffic Controllers Association has discouraged controllers from not showing up for their shifts, but many have taken second jobs to make up for lost income. Flight control staffing issues caused delays up to 160 minutes for departures to MCO on Thursday, Nov. 30.
The list of 40 impacted airports includes major hubs like New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. Airlines will be required to refund passengers for canceled flights, but not for other costs like hotels or alternate transportation.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) posted a public notice when the cuts began, assuring passengers that the measure is meant to maintain the highest level of safety. GOAA also advises travelers to track wait times at security checkpoints and check websites, like the National Airspace System Status, to stay up-to-date on new developments.
