After launching its airborne delivery service at Walmart Supercenters in Clermont and Apopka, drone operator Wing has announced an expansion into Ocoee. The Palo Alto, CA-based company has begun Florida service in the Greater Orlando area with more locations on the way.

In December, The Orlando Real reported on the approval of a delivery drone hub at the Walmart Supercenter at 1450 Johns Lake Rd. in Clermont. The location began service on July 29 along with a hub the Apopka Supercenter on 1700 South Orange Blossom Tr. Wing posted the Ocoee announcement the same day.
“At Walmart, we’re always looking for new ways to give customers more choice and flexibility,” said Walmart Senior Vice President Greg Cathey in a prepared statement. “Working with Wing allows us to bring Orlando customers a wide assortment of everyday items through one of the fastest and most innovative delivery options available.”
The expansion comes as the Walmart/Wing partnership is following up its Houston, Atlanta, and Dallas-Fort Worth expansions with additional operations planned for 20 U.S. metros including Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, and Philadelphia.
How it works

The delivery system operates from a fenced-in location set up in a Walmart parking lot. Drones are housed in a storage container and launched from portable pads. Orders scheduled for delivery are packaged and brought to the drone hub where they are attached to a tether at the base of the aircraft.
The drones are powered by vertical lift motors and separate cruise motors, and operate within a 4- to 5-mile radius. When an order is placed, the guidance system chooses the safest route. Individual flights are navigated autonomously while human pilots monitor weather and air traffic for multiple flights from a central location. Delivery times are generally 30 minutes or less.
Drones can carry packages up to 2.5 pounds at speeds up to 60 mph and altitudes of 150-200 feet. After reaching the delivery zone, they hover at an altitude of 20 feet and lower the tethered item to the ground. Package sizes will eventually increase to 5 lbs.

A Wing representative informed The Orlando Real that the Ocoee Walmart at 10500 W Colonial Dr. will begin the service within a matter of weeks. Additional Walmart locations at 550 U.S. Highway 27 in Clermont and 36205 U.S. Highway 27 in Haines City will follow.
