Sean Sweeney attended his first press conference as head coach of the Orlando Magic on Thursday, June 18. Fresh off an NBA Finals run as San Antonio Spurs associate head coach, he described his mindset as he begins his first head coaching job and addressed the pressure of leading a team that hasn’t made a deep postseason run in 16 years.

Sweeney’s season with the Spurs was part of a 15-year NBA career that he began as video coordinator for the New Jersey Nets, from 2011-2013. He went on to serve a combined 12 seasons as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets.
His abilities and dedication have been lauded by players and coaches, and he’s earned a reputation for his skill as a defensive tactician. Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman added his own praise at the start of the press conference.
“He has a mastery of the material. He has an understanding of how this is supposed to work from a player standpoint to a team standpoint, and how the big picture all melds together in producing a winning team.”
After Sweeney took the Magic job, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson offered his own notable compliment.
“Happy for Orlando, and happy for us as he’s in the Eastern Conference.”
“It meant a lot coming from him,” Sweeney said. “Very thankful for him, his leadership, and how he allowed the coaches on his staff to be their best selves.”

Despite the Magic’s first-round postseason exit – their third in a row – the team is looking for a strong start next season with the return of core players Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, and Franz Wagner.
“There’s obviously talent here,” Sweeney said. “Guys are hungry. They’re ready to win, they want to keep working and building.”
To that end, Sweeney is emphasizing character, competition, and connection while maintaining a culture of what he called active attention: to listen as well as talk. “We’re gonna value the game,” he said.
When asked how his reputation for defense could help the offense, Sweeney said there should be an effort to improve overall performance, including strategic positioning and offensive rebounding, rather than focusing on offense or defense.
“The better we play on offense the better we defend,.” he said. “The better we defend, the better we play on offense.”
A vocation
Sweeney brings years of experience to his new position and sees it as more than a job.
The Magic job comes with obvious pressure for marked improvement, but Sweeney framed it as an opportunity to take his game to the next level while helping the team do the same.
“For me, coaching is not a profession, it’s a vocation. And I’m going to work to my highest level to do the best job I can for this franchise,” he said. “And I’m excited to begin.”
Sweeney and company will make their preseason debut at Kia Center on Oct. 13 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The second preseason home game will be three days later against the Miami Heat. The team’s entire 2026-27 schedule will be posted at NBA.com/magic.
