Pet Alliance is completing a major expansion to its Orlando-area services with the opening of a new 25,000-square-foot facility. The property, located at 4311 S. John Young Pkwy., houses the Kylie J. Capri Campus and Edward H. Hensley Adoption Center and will officially open on Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m.

Guests are greeted in a comfortable welcome area.

Formerly the SPCA of Central Florida and Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, the nonprofit provides compassionate services for pets while striving to develop innovative animal care and sheltering solutions. Additional Pet Alliance shelters are located at 12050 E. Colonial Dr. in Orlando and 2800 County Home Rd. in Sanford.

The new facility is just down the road from Orange County Animal Services by Mall at Millennia, which will soon break ground on its own shelter.

Dogs and cats enjoy modern, air-conditioned housing.

A modern shelter design provides space, air conditioning, and the capacity to house 275 animals. A state-of-the-art veterinary clinic includes radiology, dental care, a maternity ward with neonatal space, and an expanded operating room.

The shelter houses the region's largest pet medical facility with exam space (above), an operating room (below), and dental care.

Maternity and neonatal areas are separate from regular animal housing.

Animal services also include indoor and outdoor play areas, disease-specific quarantine spaces for dogs and cats, and space to assist the boarding needs of area shelters evacuated by natural disasters. An on-site industrial laundry and separate kitchens for dog and cat food prep are also provided.

Dogs enjoy spacious indoor play areas and a "catio" space is currently in progress (below) for a free-roam indoor/outdoor experience for cats.

One of the more unique additions is a 160-seat community meeting space available for rent. Events can include a special guest appearance by residents of the shelter.

On-site professionals provide assistance to owners having difficulty caring for their pets, and discrete surrender services are offered in a specific area.

“We understand it’s a difficult time for owners and their pets if separation is necessary,” said Pet Alliance Director of Development & Communications, Brandy Pennett. “We offer the service in a room separate from the general welcome area.”

A vegetable and herb garden for the preparation of natural treats is in development, along with a pet memorial area.

Community support

Hallway murals feature animals owned by longtime Pet Alliance supporters.

Construction of the $15 million facility began in 2024 with funding solely from community donations. “We’re now less than $301,000 away from raising the full amount and finishing debt-free,” said Pet Alliance Interim Executive Director, Lindsay Framstead. “We’re making a final push for donations and hope to meet the goal very soon."

A pantry is stocked to help pet owners in need.

Donations are also accepted to stock a pet pantry with food and basic essentials. Owners in need are given free access to the pantry one day each month. A schedule is posted on the Pet Alliance website and social media.

Grand opening

The shelter currently houses 50 residents and all will be present for a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting on Saturday, March 28, followed by a grand opening community celebration. The shelter will be open daily for adoptions from 12-6 p.m. For more information on Pet Alliance and to view dogs and cats available for adoption, visit petallianceorlando.org.
