Salt & Straw is now open in the West Side area of Disney Springs! The highly anticipated ice cream shop is already super popular and is experiencing high volume! This unique shop serves up some of the most unique and delicious ice cream flavors. Let’s talk about where they started and what they offer.

They spent $16 on four used ice cream makers and tirelessly and endlessly practiced making ice cream until it was perfect! Throughout the process, they asked their community, friends, peers, (pretty much anyone they could find) for advice and inspiration and created this amazing business! One of their mottos, which I absolutely love, is “If you ever stop believing in magic, eat some ice cream”.
Salt & Straw is owned by cousins Kim Malek and Tyler Malek and is a family-run business. Kim wanted to start a business that brought together community, which began the process of opening Salt & Straw in 2009. Neither Kim nor Tyler had ever made ice cream before, but they both had a dream and went for it.
What Are They Known For?
Salt & Straw uses their ice cream as a blank canvas for storytelling! They make their ice cream by hand all the while utilizing local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. They have very unique flavors of ice cream that taste delicious. Their ice cream is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. They love to collaborate with local groups to create unique flavors as well.
Fun fact: The name Salt & Straw comes from the turn of the century when ice cream was cranked with rock salt, surrounding it and then packed onto hay or straw! Pretty interesting, right?

Popular and Unique Flavors
On a monthly basis, there are typically about 12 different flavors. While some flavors are semi-traditional, most are unique. In addition to this, there are limited edition flavors that change monthly as well. This works well for a lot of places, like Gideon’s Bakehouse, as it keeps you wanting to keep coming back to see what’s new. It’s not plain vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry…it’s wild and adventurous flavors that will delight your taste buds.
Some of the flavors they’ve had in the past are Roasted Peach and Sage Cornbread Stuffing, Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey, Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, and Creepy Crawly Critters. The names sound odd, and the mixture of flavors sounds even more odd, but they work really well together! The flavors change on the first Friday of every month, so make sure to come on down and try them all!

Flights
Having trouble deciding on just one flavor? At Salt & Straw you can order an ice cream flight to try multiple flavors. A flight comes with four different flavors. It consists of one scoop of each of the flavors of your choosing. Waffle chips are included with each scoop to make it even more enjoyable! It is truly the ultimate Salt & Straw experience!
