Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream

By Yasmene Warren

It’s freezing in Orlando! Or at least, it is inside Orlando’s Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream shop! Check out how this business puts a chilling twist on everybody’s favorite frozen treat.

What is Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream?

Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream is an ice cream shop that specializes in making ice cream that is frozen with liquid nitrogen in house. Each ice cream flavor is made to order, so you can watch as the liquid nitrogen vapors emit from the mixing bowl itself. Liquid nitrogen freezes ice cream at -320 degrees, which is why they’re able to make your order so quickly in store.

Located in East Orlando on Alafaya Trail is where you’ll find the magic happening. There are also two other locations in Lake Mary and Winter Springs. The Alafaya Trail location is open every day from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., which is perfect for college students wrapping up their afternoon classes in search of something to cool them down.

The Flavors and More

Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream offers 31 flavors to choose from. You can get classics such as chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, or you can switch it up and get something like cookie dough or pumpkin spice!

If you’re not really feeling ice cream, you can get any of your flavors made with frozen yogurt or coconut milk instead! The sizes include regular, large, shake or pint. Once you pick your flavor, you can add mix-ins to your creation. Each mix-in is 70 cents, and premium mix-ins are $1. The mix-ins are divided into sections, which include chocolate, cookies, syrup, candy, peanut butter, fruits, cereals, nuts and other.

If you don’t want to get creative, there are also plenty of fan favorites to choose from, such as Ultimate Cookies & Cream, Cosmic Brownie, Milk & Cookies, Caffeine Dream and more! Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream also sells dragon’s breath, which is a frozen dessert made from cereal dipped in liquid nitrogen. When you eat it, the vapors from the liquid nitrogen come out of your mouth, hence the name “dragon’s breath!”

The Science

So why liquid nitrogen? Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream explains it all! Because liquid nitrogen is so cold and freezes quickly, the size of ice crystals are drastically reduced. Smaller ice crystals equals creamier ice cream!

The idea of consuming nitrogen sounds scary, but nitrogen makes up 78.1% of our atmosphere and is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It’s also non-toxic and non flammable and evaporates in the air.

Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream simply found a way to put science behind food making, and the results are amazing!
