Inside Look at Tron: Lightcycle Run

By Jessica Hristov

One of Walt Disney World’s most highly anticipated rides, TRON: Lightcycle Run, finally has an opening date! The long-awaited ride will be opening April 4, 2023 to all park guests! First announced in 2017, it feels like we have been waiting forever for this ride to be completed. As the opening date rapidly approaches, and special previews begin, we are learning new info almost daily about Magic Kingdom’s newest ride. Here is everything you need to know about TRON: Lightcycle Run.

Racing Through The Grid

The TRON Coaster is based off the TRON movie franchise, including the 2010 Disney movie “TRON: Legacy”. Perhaps you’ve seen footage on YouTube of the TRON Coaster in Shanghai Disneyland, or maybe you were even lucky enough to ride it, but either way – it’s opening at Magic Kingdom so soon! We got the chance to join in on one of the previews, and racing through the grid is an experience like no other.

Once you walk up to the ride, you'll walk ride under the Light Cycles quickly passing overhead, giving you a glimpse of what this race entails. The curved, grid-like structures above you change from blue to orange throughout the ride, paired with the soundtrack featured in the franchise. There are a couple of Light Cycles to test comfortability before arriving in the queue. For those who don't feel comfortable on the Light Cycle motorbikes, there are also two vehicles with chair-like seats located in the back of the coaster to accommodate anyone who wishes to experience this new ride.

There are two sides to the queue, which lead you to each side of the ride that are exactly mirrored. As you enter, you're assigned to Team Blue in the race, and the theming brings you right into the world of Tron.

Before loading, there are double-sided lockers to store all of your belongings including bags, drinks, and cellphones. This ride doesn't go upside down, but be sure all items are placed in the locker if they cannot be securely placed in a pocket. Each person get's their own motorbike, with two bikes beside each other throughout the ride. This coaster is semi-indoor, with the initial launch thrusting you to the outdoor portion of the ride that reaches a top speed of nearly 60 mph!

When exiting, you'll arrive to the opposite side of the lockers where you can collect your belongings and view your Photopass picture! Since this ride is a bit further back in Tomorrowland, there are also restrooms located right by the exit of the ride.

Additional Info

Although TRON will open to the public on April 4, 2023, WDW Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members, and Cast Members are currently experiencing preview windows until this date. If any of those apply to you, keep an eye on your email for sign up times! TRON is in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom and will be accessible via walkway once it is complete. The walkway will be between the Tomorrowland Light & Power Company gift shop (which is also the exit from Space Mountain) and Tomorrowland Speedway.

Disney has also recently announced that there will be no standby line for TRON once it opens, and they will be utilizing the virtual queue. Every new attraction over the past few years (Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind) have all utilized the virtual queue upon opening. You may join the virtual queue with valid park admission using your My Disney Experience app, and it will also be offered as an Individual Lightning Lane Selection with Disney Genie +.

Overall

We can’t wait for you to experience TRON: LightCycle Run! We’ve all been waiting since 2017 and it is well worth the wait! If you want a little sneak peek on the progress of TRON (and you happen to be at Magic Kingdom), take a ride on the PeopleMover or the Tomorrowland Speedway. There, you have an excellent view of the ride and if you’re lucky, you can see it being tested!

Are you going to ride TRON: LightCycle Run when it opens?
