Propag8 in Windermere

by Yasmene Warren

In search of a calm, cool place to grab hand-crafted drinks and a bite to eat on the low? Then look no further! Located in Windermere hidden within the restaurant Feather and Quill is where you’ll find the discreetly located bar Propag8, which is just the kind of place you’re looking for.

What is It?

Propag8 is a speakeasy, which is an illicit establishment that sells alcoholic beverages, something that came about during the Prohibition era. Now, speakeasies are a fun way to experience the thrill in the chase as most speakeasies, like Propag8, lack signage and require a password for entry.

Propag8 is one that does require a password, and it changes every night. The only way to get this password is by following the bar’s Instagram @propag8_windermere, where it posts the night’s password on its story.

When you walk in, there will be a small window peering into the bar where you will be asked for the night’s password in order to gain entry. This bar is currently open Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Naturally, given that Propag8 is a bar, its access is limited to those aged 21 and older. Additionally, because it’s a speakeasy meant to be an exclusive space, there’s only room for about 20 people, so if you’re looking to bring a large party here, you better hope there’s no one else there!

The Ambiance

Just walking down Propag8’s secretive entryway provides a visually appealing experience as you pass the walls lined with live greenery.

Once granted access to the bar, the door lined with string lights and shrubs swings open as you walk down a small hallway with walls decorated the same. Waiting for you at the end of the entryway is a large, spooky-looking tree, and the LEDs fill the room with a vibrant violet and magenta. Even the bar is lined with table-top plants, and behind it lies a wall of a variety of liquors and spirits.

You can sit at the bar or in one of Propag8’s small chairs and sofas — all surrounded by flourishing plant life. If you love the greenery, then you’re in luck as Propag8 sells all of the house plants it has decorating the bar!

Cocktails Galore

Propag8 specializes in cocktails, and its menu is quite the extensive one. Its cocktail menu is organized by list. On it, you’ll find the Scotch Whisky list, the International Whisky list, the Domestic Whisky list, and a list of the bar’s signature cocktails.

This bar has lots of fun, unique drinks on the menu. “Coffee’s for Closers” is made up of illegal joven, contratto aperitif, cold brew, hibiscus syrup and lemon. The “Young Grasshopper” is made with mint chocolate chip milk punch, 400 conejos mezcal, green chartreuse and mint and chocolate bitters. You could also try “Mr. Tally Man,” made with plantation pineapple rum, barbancourt agricole, giffards banana, lime, spiced simple, egg white and malbec float.

There are plenty of other cocktails to choose from, but if you’re in the mood for something else, you have the option to pick your spirit of choice and make it a cocktail.

Palate Pleasers

Being discreetly connected to a restaurant allows Propag8 to serve food in addition to your drinks. You can order warm nuts and olives, fried gnocchi (pictured below), skillet mac and cheese, beef tartare, fried lasagna bites, bone marrow croquettes, foie gras, cheese and charcuterie and seasonal brulee. Propag8 features one of these appetizers every weekend on its Instagram page, so if you’re not sure what to get, see what the workers themselves recommend before you go!

Overall

It’s not the best for those in search of a bar that’ll give them the thriving night-life experience, but it’s perfect for those looking for a place that will provide a relaxing, fresh drinking and dining experience. The lighting is low, and so is the music, but the spirits are high, and Propag8’s low-down, unique atmosphere is sure to please.
