SmallCakes Cupcakery & Creamery

By Jessica LaVigne

What better way to start your day than with a gourmet cupcake from one of the best bakeries in Orlando? From cupcakes to ice cream, SmallCakes is the best place for fresh baked goodies and treats, and they live by the slogan “maybe a cupcake will help!”

The Cupcakery’s Rise to Fame

SmallCakes was founded by Jeff Martin in 2008, and according to their website their mission is “to use creative flavors, quality ingredients, and friendly service to provide the finest cupcake experience worthy of returning and recommending.”

The cupcakery started gaining nation-wide recognition after being featured on “Cupcake Wars” in seasons one, two, and seven, as well as on a list of one of Whoopi’s Favorite Desserts on “The View”. SmallCakes is now also named one of the top ten cupcake places to try in the country, according to USA TODAY.

Where is it?

With six locations within Central Florida, you can grab a specialty cupcake wherever you live or are visiting. We visited the Universal Blvd location, but other locations include Kissimmee, Clermont, Winter Park, Apopka, and Lake Mary.

As soon you walk in, you can see the selection of cupcakes and other goodies for the day. Each of these are iced fresh daily, and the flavors are constantly changing based on availability.

You can take your cupcake to go in one of SmallCakes signature pink boxes, or eat it in the shop at the few tables lined along the pink walls. There’s also an Instagram-worthy wall filled with cartoon treats and word bubbles, ideal for your picture perfect treat!

The Cupcakes and More!

Every day, SmallCakes puts out 15+ signature and specialty cupcakes and other goodies including macrons, cake pops, brownies, and cookie sandwiches.

If you want something on a hot Florida day, they also have a small selection of ice cream with varying cupcake infused flavors and free toppings. If you want to try a few at a time, order an ice cream flight!

It was very hard to decide which treat to try from the case, so we had to grab two - a Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcake and Taco-Shaped Macaron. The macaron definitely did not taste like a taco (which is fine by me!), and was a basic vanilla flavor. The cupcake was delicious and moist, with the perfect amount of frosting.

If you have a dog, SmallCakes also sells pupcakes that are made specially for your little pupper, complete with a small bone-shaped treat on top.

Overall

It’s always the perfect time for something sweet at SmallCakes, and we will definitely be going back to try some more of their many flavors. What’s your favorite cupcake flavor?

Are you a chocolate lover? You can also check out the Chocolate Museum & Cafe just down the road on International Drive!
