Swig, the popular soda-fountain chain from Utah, is preparing to open its newest location in Clermont Ridge Plaza, located between BJ's and Walmart on US 27. Known for their unique "dirty sodas" and iconic pink-frosted cookies, Swig has created a loyal following since its inception in 2010, and now, Clermont residents will be able to experience the hype firsthand.
What is ‘dirty soda?’
Swig's 'dirty sodas' are unlike anything you’ve had before. The chain specializes in mixing base sodas like Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper with syrups, creams, and fresh fruit purees. Choose from popular menu items like the Dirty Dr. Pepper, featuring the popular soda infused with coconut or customize your own. The menu offers a huge variety of mix-ins, making it easy to customize drinks and flavors you never knew could go together.
Swig History
Founded by Nicole Tanner in St. George, Utah, Swig was born out of a desire to offer delicious drinks without the wait that comes from traditional fast food lines. Tanner, inspired by the pebble ice drinks at Sonic, wanted to create a streamlined soda experience, and Swig quickly became a hit among Utah locals. Its popularity skyrocketed in part due to its appeal to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who abstain from coffee and alcohol. The Mormon church clarified in 2012 that its health code does not prohibit the consumption of caffeinated sodas, making Swig’s offerings the perfect social treat.
Speaking of treats, they also offer some snack options including pretzel bites and cheese, and a variety of cookies!
Now, with locations spreading across the country, Swig is gaining traction far beyond Utah. The rise of 'dirty soda' chains is turning heads nationwide, fueled by viral TikToks and even appearances in pop culture, like the recent TV hit Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. This trend has become a cultural phenomenon, especially among influencers in the Mountain States, who have turned Swig’s signature sodas into social media sensations.
Beyond its unique drink menu, Swig’s story includes some drama of its own. In 2015, the company sued its competitor Sodalicious over the use of the term "dirty soda," which Swig had allegedly trademarked in 2013. Even though the lawsuit ended in an undisclosed settlement, it still solidified Swig's claim as the original home of the dirty soda trend.
