The Walt Disney Company is relocating 2,000 jobs from California to Lake Nona in Florida. It was just announced that Disney is investing a whopping $864 million into the new Lake Nona campus. Many of the employees relocating from California will be for jobs in finance, digital technology and product development. Josh D’Amaro, the Disney Parks chairman, said that the selected employees will have about 18 months to relocate.
The proximity to the parks was just one of the many incentives in selecting the Lake Nona location. Disney has also been approved for a capital investment tax credit though the state of Florida. Florida does not have a state income tax which is said to have been another big incentive for the move. Lake Nona has a lot of available homes and is expected to have another big boom in real estate sales in the area.
In a letter to cast members, Josh D’Amaro told them about plans to relocate and hopes for the company’s future. He wrote “…Expanding our already significant DPEP footprint in Florida makes sense. In addition to Florida’s business friendly climate, this new regional campus gives us the opportunity to consolidate our teams and be more collaborative and impactful both from a creative and operational standpoint.” D’Amaro added that while the number of those relocated is slated to start with 2,000 cast members, it will quickly grow.
D’Amaro continued, “Florida is known for its rich culture of hospitality and active lifestyle as well as a lower cost of living with no state income tax…” He encouraged his California cast members to reach out to their Central Florida co-workers to learn more about the benefits of living in the Sunshine State and all the wonderful amenities of Lake Nona. Lake Nona is known for being one of Orlando’s best neighborhoods and “a community of and for the future” It will be interesting to see what becomes of Disney’s latest project and its effect on Lake Nona.
