Days before his sixth anniversary as Walt Disney World President and after 36 years with the Walt Disney Company, Jeff Vahle announced his upcoming retirement.
Vahle, who turns 63 in June, shared the news in a social media post on the evening of May 11, stating he first informed his team of his decision.
“I started my career as an engineer at Magic Kingdom and I’m wrapping it up with the best job ever, leading Walt Disney World into a period of remarkable growth in partnership with our incredible Cast Members and community,” reads the statement.
Vahle plans to retire in the summer but did not indicate a specific date.
Early career
Vahle began his Disney career in 1990 as a mechanical engineer at Magic Kingdom park. He rose to an executive role in Engineering Services before serving in several executive positions at Disney’s worldwide parks, starting in 2004. He led Disney Signature Experiences from 2018-2020, overseeing the expansion of Disney’s cruise fleet and other additions to Adventures by Disney and Disney Vacation Club.
He succeeded former Walt Disney World President, Josh D’Amaro, when D’Amaro was named Disney Experiences Chairman in 2020. As president, Vahle oversaw Walt Disney World's workforce of 80,000 cast members, along with its four theme parks, 25 resort hotels, two water parks, facilities operations and support, ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, and Disney Springs.
A world of growth
Since taking over the role, Vahle oversaw an expansion of Walt Disney World attractions and experiences that included:
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Tiana's Bayou Adventure
- Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana
- Country Bear Musical Jamboree
- The reimagined Test Track
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
- New nighttime spectaculars at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT
- Island Tower at Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows
What's next
“I’ll be here through late July, so I’ll save the reminiscing for later,” Vahle added in his social media statement. He plans to assist the summertime launch of Walt Disney World's Cool KIDS’ Summer and the opening of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
"It’s an exciting time at Walt Disney World, and I’m looking forward to being part of it in the months ahead."
A successor has not yet been mentioned by Vahle or the Walt Disney Company.
