Back in November 2022, Disney made an announcement that shocked everyone – their current CEO Bob Chapek would be replaced by Bob Iger effective immediately. Just as the news was announced, speculation and rumors began to form. Is Genie + going away? Are prices going to drop? Can he bring fastpasses back? Will Iger finally end the park reservation system? As we begin this new year, we'll have to wait and see what changes will take affect in 2023. While we don’t have all the answers just yet, here is what we know so far.
Park Reservation System
Back when Walt Disney World first reopened after the Covid-19 pandemic in July 2020, they implemented a park reservation system to be able to control park capacity and keep it low. Fast forward to present day, almost everything has gone back to “normal” but the park reservation system remains in place. Gone are the days when you could buy a park ticket and go to the park(s) of your choice. Many guests don’t like this system because days quickly sell out for the more popular parks on busy days. So, the big question loomed, “What will Bob Iger do about this?”
New CEO
On November 20, 2022, Disney made the shocking announcement that Bob Iger would be coming back as Disney’s CEO and replacing current CEO Bob Chapek. Many Disney fans were delighted with the news because many of them wanted to see a big change in Disney – a positive change. Immediately, questions started flooding in for Bob Iger about the future of the parks and the company. Among the most popular questions was about the future of the park reservation system. Bob Iger released a statement about this during the Town Hall meeting. He said he has not used the system personally, and he wants to speak with Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, before saying anything else about it.
Overall
While we don’t have a definitive answer about whether park reservations are here to stay, we can only hope that the meeting of Bob Iger and Josh D’Amaro will produce a better solution for guests and park availability. While it is nice to not have a 100% full park every time you want to go, I can see how guests visiting from out of state would be frustrated when the park of their choice is blocked out. Here’s to hoping for some positive changes with Bob Iger back in the driver’s seat.
